General Motors is apparently on the verge of entering Formula 1 and could be represented in the premier class of motorsport with the Cadillac brand from 2026. According to Sky Sports, the project has made progress, and the US automaker has received the green light to establish itself as a new team. Currently, Haas is the only US team in Formula 1, with Nico Hülkenberg as a driver.

Mercedes Motorsport Director Toto Wolff hinted on the sidelines of the Las Vegas Grand Prix that a direct entry by General Motors could find approval. "If GM comes in as a team owner, that's a different story," said Wolff. However, this decision lies solely with the FIA and the Formula 1 owner Liberty Media. So far, the existing teams have resisted an expansion of the starting field because they feared loss of revenue.

The discussion about another team was particularly initiated by the Andretti team's project, which had already received the green light from the FIA. However, Formula 1 itself blocked the entry, leading to legal investigations in the USA. Now Cadillac appears to be in a leading role as a strategic partner of Andretti, while Michael Andretti may take on a smaller role. Since September, the majority owner of the project has been Dan Towriss, who had personally traveled to Las Vegas for negotiations.

A possible entry by General Motors would not only strengthen the U.S. presence in Formula 1 but also expand the brand portfolio in the racing series. Cadillac, known for its luxury and performance models, could give Formula 1 new economic and sporting impulses. If the entry is finalized, it would be the first time General Motors enters Formula 1 with its own brand.
