Prada is on the brink of acquiring Versace.
The negotiations between Prada and the New York fashion group Capri Holdings have been dragging on for months. Capri had initially set a price of 3 billion euros for Versace, which led to talks with additional potential buyers. According to insiders, an agreement could still be reached "in the coming weeks," with price and timing still subject to change.
Capri acquired Versace in 2018 for around 1.85 billion euros including debts from the family of the founder Gianni Versace. The company had been looking for a buyer for the brand for some time – the sales process accelerated after a planned merger with Tapestry, the owner of Coach and Kate Spade, failed last year due to antitrust concerns of the US authorities.
Prada, Italy's largest luxury fashion group, has so far proven resilient in the face of crises and achieved strong results, particularly through the growth of its brand Miu Miu. The company is currently preparing for a generational change: Miuccia Prada and co-founder Patrizio Bertelli plan to gradually hand over leadership to their son Lorenzo Bertelli.
Insiders see Versace as a strategically valuable addition for Prada. While Prada's core brand stands for minimalist elegance, Versace introduces a contrasting design DNA with its distinctive, opulent style. In addition to Miu Miu, the British shoe brand Church's and the main Prada line are already part of the group's portfolio.
