Roblox, the popular gaming platform with around 89 million daily users worldwide, has introduced new restrictions to increase the safety of children. Users under 13 can no longer send direct messages outside of games. Within games, direct messaging will only be possible with parental consent.
Additionally, Roblox announced the introduction of special accounts for parents to limit their children's daily usage time and view their friends list. Children under 13 will also receive restricted access to certain games based on the observed behavior of other users in these areas.
About 13 percent of Roblox users are under 13 years old, making the platform a target for pedophiles. Despite automated checks and other safety precautions, Roblox has repeatedly come under criticism, most recently through an article by Bloomberg pointing out weaknesses in child safety. Roblox continues to emphasize that there is no systematic problem, but has implemented several new safety initiatives in recent weeks.
The heightened security measures seem to boost investor confidence. Roblox stock rose by 3.0 percent to $52.57 in NYSE trading on Tuesday.
