The Food, Beverages and Catering Union (NGG) calls for warning strikes in the system catering sector at large chains like McDonald's, Burger King, and Nordsee. The reason for the actions is the stagnating progress in the collective bargaining negotiations, which are scheduled to continue only in November after two fruitless rounds.
In the negotiations concerning 120,000 employees, the NGG is demanding, among other things, an entry-level wage of 15 euros per hour and an additional 500 euros per month for higher wage groups. "Employees have a massive need to catch up on wages," said NGG chief negotiator Mark Baumeister. However, the employers did not present a new offer in the second round of negotiations. Baumeister criticized this as "disrespectful" and announced that actions and warning strikes are to be expected nationwide starting next week.
The Federal Association of System Catering (BdS), however, emphasized that it had presented an improved offer that would lead to a "fair wage structure." BdS Managing Director Markus Suchert called on the NGG to move constructively and contribute to a balanced wage agreement, particularly in light of the currently challenging business environment.
While McDonald's shares temporarily increased by 0.90 percent to $294.97 on the New York Stock Exchange, Starbucks shares were slightly down at $99.11 on the NASDAQ.
