Top investors are redirected to the use of websites. Searches suggest that Meta's apps may also not be available. Google's YouTube and Spotify Technology SA, the world's most popular video and music services, are joining Netflix Inc. and avoiding Apple's upcoming mixed-reality glasses. YouTube said in a statement on Thursday that it has no plans to release a new app for Apple Vision Pro and that its long-standing iPad application will not work on the device - at least for now.

YouTube, similar to Netflix, recommends customers to use a web browser if they want to watch content: "YouTube users can use YouTube to start in Safari on Vision Pro." Spotify is currently not planning to release a new app for visionOS - the operating system of Vision Pro - and does not expect its iPad app to work on the device when it hits the market, according to a person familiar with the matter.

But the music service will probably still work through a web browser. Bloomberg News reported on Wednesday about Netflix's decision. The Vision Pro will include access to Apple's apps for music and podcasts, which compete with Spotify's offerings.

However, the rejection by Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube means that the most popular streaming apps will not be available when the glasses are released on February 2nd. Apple has largely marketed the device as a platform for video, games, and other entertainment.

YouTube is a particularly large gap in the product offering. When the first iPad by Apple was released in 2010, YouTube was one of the few pre-installed apps on the tablet. However, the company does not rule out supporting the Vision Pro in the future, but stated that it had "no further plans to share at this time."

YouTube and Spotify continue to offer popular apps for the iPhone and iPad. And this could theoretically have provided an easy path for supporting the Vision Pro. Developers with iPad software in the regular App Store see these apps by default in the Vision Pro Store.

This means that developers must sign out if they do not wish to participate. Several other entertainment apps are still participating, including Disney+, Max, Peacock, ESPN, and Amazon Prime Video. In total, Apple says that the device will support over one million titles in the App Store for the glasses. The company will begin pre-selling the Vision Pro on Friday.

YouTube and Spotify declined to say why they have chosen not to support the $3,499 device. Spotify does not offer an app on competing glasses such as Meta Platforms Inc.'s Quest, although YouTube does. Spotify is also involved in a dispute with Apple over App Store policies, but the decision for the Vision Pro is unrelated, according to a person familiar with the matter who requested anonymity as the deliberations are confidential.

Searches conducted by MacStories on Thursday suggest that other important iPhone and iPad apps, including Facebook's Meta, Instagram, and WhatsApp, are currently not optimized for Vision Pro.

But this could change by the time the device launches or these developers may possibly plan new dedicated versions for vision OS. Meta has not immediately responded to a request for comment. Apple's senior executive in charge of Vision Pro told employees this week that he expects healthcare, technician training, and education to eventually become important areas for the product.

The company is also investigating applications for businesses, according to Bloomberg News. The Vision Pro is Apple's first major new product category since the launch of smartwatches in 2015.
