The world of synthetic biology has taken a significant step toward the future. Researchers from Stanford and the Arc Institute succeeded in designing complete living genomes using artificial intelligence (AI). In an experimental breakthrough, they developed synthetic bacteriophages—viruses that infect bacteria—that has the potential to push the boundaries of what was previously imaginable. The underlying technology is based on "genome language models" called Evo 1 and Evo 2, which function similarly to the large language models behind ChatGPT. But instead of words, these models process billions of base pairs of viral DNA. While conventional approaches rely on modifying existing viruses, these AI models stand out because they can create entirely new genomes—a milestone that previously seemed unattainable. In experiments, 302 genomes designed by AI generated 16 viable phages that were able to infect E. coli and, in some cases, surpassed the wild ΦX174 virus. These results could fundamentally change phage therapy, a resurgent method against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. However, great potential also comes with risk. The narrow imagination of AI can bring about unpredictable biological processes that could have both innovative and dangerous impacts. Despite extensive safety measures, the tension between what is possible and what is responsible remains a critical point for science and society. The study results suggest that artificial intelligence can not only design existing life forms but also surpass them in their evolution. In light of global challenges such as antibiotic resistance and pandemic risks, the question of whether humanity can keep up with the pace of research is more urgent than ever.
