Takeaways NEW
- FAA eases restrictions for Boeing's 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner.
- Boeing can conduct its own safety inspections again.
The American aviation authority FAA has announced plans to ease restrictions on some Boeing aircraft models, including the 737 Max and 787 Dreamliner. This could accelerate the production and delivery of the aircraft, as Boeing is now allowed to conduct the final safety inspections for selected models itself.
In 2019, the FAA prohibited Boeing from issuing airworthiness certificates for its 737 Max aircraft due to two fatal crashes. The same applied to the 787 models from 2022 due to production quality issues. Thanks to the partial authority now granted, Boeing can once again conduct its own safety inspections, indicating the FAA's confidence in the company's quality standards.
The change will take effect on September 29, 2025. The new regulation allows the FAA to focus intensively on monitoring the ongoing production process while Boeing continues to be closely supervised. The process for issuing airworthiness certificates will alternate weekly between Boeing and the FAA in the future.
Despite regulatory restrictions, Boeing's shares have increased by about 25% this year and rose nearly 4% last Friday. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journal reported that Boeing might be allowed to increase its production capacity for the 737 Max from 38 to 42 aircraft per month, although the FAA has not yet officially confirmed this.
Developments this year also include Boeing's success in securing significant contracts, such as the sale of up to 22 787 Dreamliners to Uzbekistan Airways and up to 75 Dreamliners to Turkish Airlines. These new orders and the easing of FAA restrictions offer Boeing the opportunity to further recover financially.
