Takeaways NEW

  • BYD records strong growth in the European electric car market.
  • New production plant in Hungary to enhance competitiveness.
The rising popularity of electric vehicles (EVs) in Europe opens up new opportunities for Chinese manufacturers, primarily BYD. Following the introduction of their first models Atto 3, Han, and Tang at the end of 2022, BYD has expanded its vehicle range to at least ten different models. According to ACEA data, BYD's market share in new registrations in the EU grew to 1.1% in July 2025, a significant jump from 0.4% the previous year. While new registrations in the EU overall declined by 0.7%, BYD recorded an impressive sales increase of 251.3% in the first half of 2025. This raises the question of whether European concerns about a Chinese takeover might prove unfounded. Maria Grazia Davino, recently appointed as Senior Vice President and Regional Managing Director at BYD Europe, explained the company's future vision in an interview with Euronews. She emphasized the acceptance of the vehicles: "Our cars exceed customer expectations, the conversion rate is outstanding." The establishment of a production plant in Hungary, where the first Dolphin Surf is soon to roll off the assembly line, is part of the strategy to bypass import duties and strengthen competitiveness. Despite additional tariffs of 17% for BYD and new purchase incentives in countries like France that favor European vehicles, Davino remains optimistic. "We are ready to compete," she said. BYD plans to enhance its sales and personnel strategy to meet growing brand awareness. The continued success of hybrids, which accounted for 34.8% of all new registrations in the first half of 2025, underscores the preference for practical alternatives. Models like the Seal 6 DM-i Touring offer a range of up to 1,350 kilometers and are positioned as a stress-free solution against "range anxiety." Ultimately, consumer decisions will determine the success of fully electric versus hybrid vehicles, said Davino. The European e-car market remains an exciting field for BYD, which is gaining momentum with confidence and innovative solutions.
