The debates about the deployment of the National Guard in Los Angeles are taking a new turn. A federal appeals court in California has ruled that President Donald Trump may continue to deploy National Guardsmen in response to the protests for the time being. In a contentious legal battle that brings the competencies of federal and state governments into focus, the outcome remains uncertain. The court in San Francisco ruled in favor of the Trump administration, thereby confirming the provisional deployment of the California National Guard. This decision, made on Thursday, means a continuation of the status quo in Los Angeles, where the presence of state and military forces has been noticeable for over a week. Trump sees this as a "great victory" and emphasizes that the deployment of the National Guard is central to presidential power. He pointed out that the federal government, if necessary, can ensure the protection of citizens. Nevertheless, the legal confrontation remains controversial. California and Governor Gavin Newsom criticize the federal intervention as an unnecessary usurpation of power and support an appeal of the decision. According to Trump, deploying the troops serves to protect against “riots” or “invasions.” While the court recognized the legality of Trump's measures, the judges declined to consider presidential decisions to be unchallengeable.
