Takeaways NEW
- Competition Puts FICO Under Pressure While VantageScore Faces Technical Challenges in the Mortgage Market.
- Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac now accept VantageScore alongside the traditional FICO for credit assessments.
In July, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac announced a critical change in their credit assessment policy: for the first time, lenders are allowed to use alternative models such as VantageScore alongside the traditional FICO score to evaluate the creditworthiness of real estate buyers. This change, announced after lengthy discussions on social media, is seen by Silvio Tavares, CEO of VantageScore Solutions, as a great success for competition. The announcement by the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) put the stock of Fair Isaac Corporation, widely known for FICO, under pressure, having since dropped by 17%. Until now, Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac were limited to accepting mortgages based on FICO scores, but the new latitude puts the Bozeman, Montana-based company under significant pressure. VantageScore, founded by the leading credit bureaus Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion, has been working since 2006 to establish itself as a serious alternative to FICO. However, the broader use of VantageScore by Fannie and Freddie still faces technical implementation hurdles. While financial and technology companies are increasingly turning to the new model, VantageScore remains untested in the large mortgage market. Despite the welcomed competition from VantageScore, FICO continues to see itself secure in the race. CEO Will Lansing notes that numerous obstacles stand in the way before VantageScore is more widely accepted. Experts emphasize that despite the ongoing changes, the well-known and proven FICO model still appears more reliable to many due to its historical success. Thus, it remains to be seen how credit assessment will evolve and whether VantageScore, despite existing skepticism regarding its independence and market penetration, can win long-term market trust.
