Takeaways NEW
- The global LNG market could tip into oversupply next year, squeezing exporters' prices and profit margins.
- Despite risks, US LNG remains attractive due to long-term contracts and European demand.
The spectacular rise of the USA as the leading exporter of liquefied natural gas (LNG) faces new challenges both domestically and internationally. With significant capacity expansions, particularly in the USA and Qatar, the global LNG market is at risk of tipping into oversupply as early as next year. This could lower prices and reduce profit margins for American exporters. Domestically, the LNG industry is confronted with growing demand for natural gas for electricity generation, partly driven by the needs of data centers and the reshoring of manufacturing activities to the USA. This year, American LNG developers have begun to embark on new projects after the Trump administration lifted the pause on new LNG projects introduced by the Biden administration. Projects like Woodside's Louisiana LNG and Venture Global's CP2 LNG received green lights. Significant projects also include Cheniere, which made a positive investment decision for the Corpus Christi Midscale Trains 8 & 9. Wood Mackenzie analysts warn of potential oversupply that could significantly lower prices by 2030. The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that nearly 300 billion cubic meters per year of new export capacity will be operational worldwide by 2030. Despite the risks of a price decline due to global oversupply, US LNG remains in demand according to experts. Long-term contracts and investor interest in the USA as an attractive LNG investment destination secure the demand. The energy consultancy also claims that the USA will benefit significantly from increased demand from Europe, which aims to replace Russian gas by 2027. Although the impending oversupply could reduce exporters' profits, it may simultaneously raise domestic natural gas prices—an incentive for domestic production to meet the increased need for both LNG exports and power generation.
