New Inspections for Imported Goods and Possible Tariff Adjustments by US Department of Commerce

The U.S. Department of Commerce recently initiated investigations into national security issues related to the import of personal protective equipment, medical products, and robotics and industrial machinery. These so-called 'Section 232' investigations were initiated on September 2 but have not yet been publicly disclosed. The results of the investigations could potentially serve as the basis for increased tariffs on a variety of medical and industrial goods. The affected imports particularly include face masks, syringes, and infusion pumps, as well as robotics and industrial machinery, including programmable, computer-assisted mechanical systems and industrial stamping and pressing machines. The department's decision indicates a possible adjustment of trade strategy concerning international imports to secure national interests.
