  • The introduction of the DDEX standard identifies AI elements in music and prevents unauthorized voice replicas and deepfakes.
  • Spotify Revises Its AI Policies to Improve Transparency and Reduce Spam in Music Production.
Spotify has announced plans to revise its AI policies to increase transparency in the use of AI in music production and reduce spam. A central element of the new strategy is the introduction of the DDEX standard, which enables the clear identification of AI elements in music tracks. This is intended to clarify whether AI was used in vocals, instrumentation, or post-production. According to Sam Duboff, Spotify's Global Head of Marketing and Policy, the music industry is pioneering the establishment of these standards. The guidelines aim to prevent music tracks from being categorized in a black-and-white manner, where they are either entirely AI-generated or not at all. Concurrently, Spotify clarifies that unauthorized replications of voices and deepfakes are strictly prohibited and removed from the platform. To address the growing issue of spam influx through AI-generated music, Spotify has also planned the introduction of a new spam filter. This filter is intended to identify suspicious content and stop its recommendation to users. According to Duboff, efforts are being made to curb such tactics to prevent system abuse. Despite the challenges, Spotify continues to support the legitimate use of AI by artists and producers. Charlie Hellman, Spotify VP and Global Head of Music, emphasizes that innovation is encouraged as long as it is done responsibly. At the same time, Spotify is committed to collaborating with distributors to prevent unauthorized profile assignments. These measures follow the increasing spread of AI-generated music tracks in the market. In the summer, the AI-generated band Velvet Sundown caused a stir, which led to criticism of the lack of transparency in labeling AI tracks. Competitors like Deezer also report an increase in AI-generated content.
