AfD on record course – Union continues to lose ground

With the new surge in AfD polling, the pressure on Chancellor Merz and the Union is growing—not only nationwide but also in the states. The next test will take place in March 2026 in Baden-Württemberg.

The AfD has reached a new all-time high of 27 percent in the latest Insa poll for Bild am Sonntag, extending its lead over the Union (25 percent). This marks the fourth consecutive time the party remains the strongest political force in Germany.

Government without Majority

The black-red coalition under Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) would only reach 39 percent according to a poll - not enough for a parliamentary majority. A numerical majority currently exists only for an alliance of the Union and AfD with a combined 52 percent, an option that Merz, however, once again strictly ruled out.

Parties in Comparison

The SPD stagnates at 14 percent, the Greens lose a point to 11 percent. The Left (11 percent), FDP (4 percent), and BSW (4 percent) remain unchanged. Thus, the smaller parties remain at a low level, while the right-wing camp continues to gain.

Merz sticks to "firewall

In an interview with the Frankfurter Allgemeine Sonntagszeitung, Merz described the AfD as the "main opponent" of the Union and announced plans to emphasize the substantive differences even more clearly in the future. He firmly rejected calls for a "normalization" in dealing with the AfD.
