Asylum recognition rate collapses – wave of lawsuits rolls through Germany

Eulerpool News Sep 26, 2025, 2:00 PM

In the first half of 2025, significantly fewer asylum applications were approved in Germany. The approval rate fell to only 26.5% according to the federal government, after having been between 59% and 72% in previous years. At the same time, more procedures were decided than before – around 52,000.

The number of lawsuits against rejected notices exploded: 90,900 new proceedings were filed, more than in the entire year of 2023. In about 9,000 cases, applicants were still granted protection after judicial review.

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt (CSU) considers the decline in asylum applications a success and speaks of a "massively reduced magnetic effect" of Germany. However, Left Party MP Clara Bünger warns that accelerated procedures could lead to "insufficient examinations" and that the political climate could influence decisions.
