Spotify takes action: Stricter rules for AI music to protect artists
The flood of AI-generated songs is growing – and so is the frustration among real musicians. Now Spotify is responding: The platform is introducing new rules to create more transparency in AI content and curb misuse.

AI deceives listeners and harms artists
For months, industry representatives have been warning that artificially generated songs are distorting the streaming landscape. The problem became particularly clear at the beginning of the year: The AI band The Velvet Sundown released music that sounded so authentic that it deceived thousands of listeners - thus depriving real artists of revenue.
Transparency instead of deception
With the new guidelines, Spotify wants to clarify if a title was created using AI. Artists are to be required to disclose the use of AI tools. The aim is to better inform users and ensure that human creativity is not displaced by automated algorithms.
The music industry sees the move as long overdue. Because the more realistic AI songs become, the harder it is for listeners to distinguish real music from artificially generated music – and the greater the pressure on artists to assert themselves against algorithmic competition.
