Despite Asylum in Greece – Over 110,000 Entitled to Protection Reapply in Germany

In Germany, there are currently more than 110,000 asylum procedures involving individuals who have already been recognized as refugees in Greece. Although the Federal Administrative Court has generally permitted deportations since April, the implementation has so far largely not taken place.

Greece refugees apply for protection in Germany again

The largest group comes from Afghanistan (45,734 people), followed by Syria (36,312) and Iraq (12,464). Other countries of origin include Somalia, Iran, Yemen, Turkey, and Sudan. The origin is unclear for around 5,000 applicants.

Court Ruling Allows Return to Greece

The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) has subsequently adjusted its practice: Since a circular of April 25, applications from "sufficiently healthy, able-bodied persons" under Section 29 Subsection 1 No. 2 of the Asylum Act are generally rejected. Only in special hardship cases – such as illness, pregnancy, or caregiving duties – is a substantive review conducted.

Implementation is progressing slowly

According to the federal government, this group does not face an existential crisis upon returning to Greece. This could ultimately lead to the failure of most of the over 110,000 still open cases, provided that Germany actually implements the returns consistently.
